After several false starts (one of which proposed that the eldest Smith daughter be kidnapped and held for ransom), the result was the charming valentine-card musical Meet Me in St. Louis. The plot hinges on the possibility that Alonzo Smith (Leon Ames), the family's banker father, might uproot the Smiths to New York, scuttling his daughter Esther (Judy Garland)'s romance with boy-next-door John Truett (Tom Drake) and causing similar emotional trauma for the rest of the household. In a cast that includes Mary Astor as Ames' wife, Lucille Bremer as another Ames daughter, and Marjorie Main as the housekeeper, the most fascinating character is played by 6-year-old Margaret O'Brien. As kid sister Tootie, O'Brien seems morbidly obsessed with death and murder, burying her dolls, "killing" a neighbor at Halloween (she throws flour in the flustered man's face on a dare), and maniacally bludgeoning her snowmen when Papa announces his plans to move to New York. Margaret O'Brien won a special Oscar for her remarkable performance, prompting Lionel Barrymore to grumble "Two hundred years ago, she would have been burned at the stake! My biggest beef with today's movies, is that, they move the cameras around too much when someone is singing or dancing, with cuts, close ups, pans, and you just know that it took 20 takes to get ONE sequence. These guys, and of course Astaire and Rogers, and all the rest of these great early talents, all did it in one or a few takes with the cameras way back showing all their moves. No gimmicks, just raw talent. Cagney, Hope, Hayworth, all of them, just sang and danced with the cameras showing their whole bodies. Even Flashdance is all cut up and you know that a body double was doing the dancing. I miss these really talented actors of old, they did it all.

My favorite number in this movie. When that giant mushroom of a gown starts bouncing when she's in his arms and they circle the room it just makes my heart sing. Brought here by being a sixth-generation St. Lousian. It's amazing how much an event in 1904 has influenced our culture. Meet me in st. louis organ ernie hayes. Meet me in st louis halloween scene. The show was widely anticipated and drew a big audience but it just didn't measure up to the film version. I was born in and grew up in St. Louis and my dad was a streetcar motorman on the line which ran behind the Smith house on Kensington Avenue (the real house looked nothing like the home in the film, though it was a beautiful residence in a beautiful neighborhood. M-G-M sent a crew to St. Louis to scout the location of the World's Fair in Forest Park and photograph what little was let, most notably the World Fair Pavilion and the stairway and globe lights down to a fountain with colored lighting. The film got it just right and got every fact correct, The film premiered at the Lowe's State Theatre in St. Louis and the movie became an enormous success for M-G-M. Nearly 70 years later it still holds up perfectly, colorful, warm, charming, nostalgic, the work of a genius director fully in evidence, and a perfect cast.

A film that is firmly ticking all the boxes for those looking for a family classic to admire and tap your feet along with. This delightful musical deals with one family and their struggle to deal with the changing of the times at the turn of the century. When the Father is requested to move to New York permanently with his job, the rest of the family are not that keen to leave their memories and their beloved home in St. Louis, and in to the mix is the varying degrees of blossoming love involving the elder daughters and their respective beaus.
This film is just so gorgeous on many fronts, the colour beautifully realises the tremendous scope director Vincent Minnelli brings with his recreation of the era, the attention to detail is quality supreme. The story is good and earthy, a sort of tale to have the viewer hankering for the good old days before the world got itself in one big hurry. The songs are crackers, enjoy standards such as The Boy Next Door, The Trolley Song, and the simply precious Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. The cast are across the board doing good work but it is of course Judy Garland who carries the movie firmly on her slender shoulders, and here she has never been prettier, and her voice is practically as good as it ever was in her career.
A film for all the family to enjoy, a film that is from the top echelons of musicals, and a film that simply demands you relax and enjoy.
